Discover the LKY100 Coin: Commemorating Lee Kuan Yew’s 100th Birth Anniversary

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) recently introduced the LKY100 coin, a special commemorative S$10 coin, as a heartfelt tribute to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. Crafted in gold-colored aluminum bronze, the LKY100 coin holds historical significance and is now available for application at face value.

The reverse side of the LKY100 coin showcases a captivating portrait of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, accompanied by iconic landmarks such as Marina Barrage and the magnificent skyline of the Raffles Place financial district. This design reflects Mr. Lee’s visionary pursuit of building a freshwater reservoir within the city, fortifying Singapore’s water resilience. Moreover, it pays homage to the Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Fullerton Building/General Post Office) and the National Gallery Singapore (formerly the Supreme Court and City Hall), two heritage buildings that hold significant historical value for the nation.

On the front side of the LKY100 coin, you’ll find the Singapore Coat of Arms, Lee Kuan Yew’s name, his birth and death years, and the inscription “100th Birth Anniversary.” An intriguing dual latent image is also incorporated, revealing the year 1923 from one angle and the year 2023 from another. This meticulously crafted design is the masterpiece of Weng Ziyan, a renowned local artist celebrated for designing notable banknotes commemorating significant events in Singapore’s history.

How to Acquire the LKY100 coin

To acquire the LKY100 coin, Singaporean citizens and permanent residents can conveniently apply through the dedicated website (link for your convenience, always check if it’s authentic website) until June 9. Each applicant may request up to five coins, with allocations guaranteed for at least one coin, even if demand exceeds supply. During the application process, applicants are required to provide their identity number, mobile phone number, and preferred bank branch for easy collection.

Payment for the LKY100 coins is only made upon collection at selected bank branches. The full list of location of the banks are here. Participating banks include DBS and POSB, OCBC and UOB, as well as the Bank of China, HSBC, Maybank, and Standard Chartered. Furthermore, individuals seeking assistance with their applications can visit community clubs, community centers, or the ServiceSG centers at Our Tampines Hub and One Punggol.

Successful application for the LKY100 coin

Successful applicants will receive SMS notifications starting in mid-August, and the LKY100 coins will be ready for collection from September onwards. Any uncollected coins after the designated collection period will be made available for exchange at banks, open to both the general public and non-Singaporeans. The final quantity of LKY100 coins minted will be determined after the application period concludes, as announced by MAS.

This commemorative LKY100 coin was announced as part of a series of initiatives to honor the centennial birth of Lee Kuan Yew, who played a pivotal role not only as Singapore’s first Prime Minister but also as a co-founder of the ruling People’s Action Party. Born on September 16, 1923, Lee Kuan Yew’s remarkable journey concluded on March 23, 2015, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to shape Singapore’s future.
